Wisconsin loses RB Clement for 4-6 weeks

Wisconsin running back Corey Clement will be sidelined four to six weeks with a sports hernia that requires surgery to repair.

Badgers coach Paul Chryst said Thursday that Clement has been “dealing with some issues since before the (season-opening) Alabama game.”

“He has been undergoing treatment since that time and has seen some progress, but not to the point where our medical staff is satisfied,” Chryst said. “So after consultation with our medical staff, Corey has decided to have surgery for the sports hernia.

” I feel bad for Corey that this is impacting his season because I know how hard he works and how important this football team is to him. We are very confident that he will make a full recovery after the surgery and I know he will attack his rehab so he can get back on the field as soon as he can.”

Clement, expected to replace Melvin Gordon this season as the team’s primary running back, carried only eight times for 16 yards in Wisconsin’s opening loss to Alabama and sat out the last two games.

Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal have take over in the backfield for Clement. Deal has rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries. Ogunbowale has 196 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 33 attempts.

If Clement returns in four weeks, he would miss three Big Ten games, including matchups with rival Iowa and Nebraska. A six-week recovery would keep him off the field until a Nov. 7 conference game against Maryland.

Without Clement, the Badgers rank last in the Big Ten in rushing at 142.33 yards per game.
