Wolves waive PF Bennett

The Minnesota Timberwolves placed former No. 1 draft pick Anthony Bennett on waivers Wednesday.

If Bennett clears waivers, he would receive a $3.65 million buyout from the Timberwolves.

If a team claims the 22-year-old forward, that team would assume his $5,803,560 salary.

“When you look at our team, our deepest position is probably power forward,” Wolves general manager Milt Newton said in a statement issued by the team. “This move balances out our roster while also allowing Anthony another opportunity in the NBA. He has a lot of talent, and his play this summer internationally made this a difficult decision for us.”

The Timberwolves are loaded at the power forward position with Karl-Anthony Towns, the first overall pick in the 2015 draft; veteran Kevin Garnett; Euroleague MVP Nemanja Bjelica and Adreian Payne.

Bennett has been a disappointment since the Cleveland Cavaliers selected the former UNLV star with the first pick in the 2013 draft. He averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds as a rookie and improved those numbers only slightly to 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds after being traded to Minnesota last season.

Yahoo Sports reported that the Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trail Blazers are at least looking into the possibility of acquiring Bennett.
